For many individuals, a stable home life or family unit is taken for granted, yet for adults unable to have children of their own, or young people no longer connected to their birth parents, these seemingly ‘normal’ dynamics mean the world. In such circumstances, pairing loving parents with children in need of a family is a truly ideal solution.
Adoption can have a profoundly positive impact on the lives of children and parents, providing a loving environment and genuinely changing lives for the better. Despite this, however, confusion and misconceptions still surround the process.
Read on to discover 5 facts about adoption here in the UK.
Adoption Is Not As Complex As Many Presume
Though the adoption process is often believed to be complicated, it is far less strict than many presume. Though individuals may be deterred from adopting, fearing they will not meet the necessary criteria, this should not be the case. Of course, rules and regulations are in place for the safety and well-being of children, but they are far less militant than many assume.
Here in the UK, individuals over the age of 21 are able to adopt, regardless of their relationship status. This includes those who are single, married, in civil partnerships, unmarried, in same-sex relationships or the partner of the child’s parent. It is worth noting that there is no upper age limit for adoption either.
16% Of Children Are Adopted By Same-Sex Couples
According to research conducted by government departments and bodies, 16% of adopted children were homed by same-sex couples in 2021. That equates to 470 children. As unmarried and same-sex couples were only granted the right to adopt in 2002, this is a huge step forward.
In the same year, 2,550 young people were adopted by couples and 310 by single adopters.
Financial Support Is Available
It is commonly presumed that you must be a homeowner or high-earner to adopt a child, yet this is untrue. Individuals who are unemployed or on low income are still able to adopt, and could even receive tax credits, benefits and financial aid to help with therapy, confidence and behaviour.
More information regarding financial support for adoptive parents and families can be found on the government website, here.
